Not Your Average Western Performer
Cowboy Poetry has been a part of the folk culture of the American West since the cattle drive days of the 1860s. It is one of the few American art forms with its roots planted firmly in American soil. It brings up images of mountains, sagebrush, deserts, and a rugged land. It paints pictures of men on horseback, wild sunsets, and brilliant dawns.
It also brings to the surface the humor of the western culture. Behind that big hat and weather toughed exterior is the taunting wry grin of a man who can twist the funny side out of anything. On the outside is the persona of a cowboy hardened to the life and danger of his profession, on the inside beats the heart of a comedian.
There are two kinds of cowboy poetry, serious and humorous. There are also two kinds of cowboy poet performers, those who stay to the original traditions of the art and those who step back and take a wider look. Then, there is Dave P. Fisher from Reno, Nevada.
Dave is not your average western performer. Having spent the better part of his life living the life of a working cowboy and horseman he is steeped in the culture and traditions of his beloved West. Yet, Dave steps back and takes the wide view of his world. His cowboy poetry comes in a unique form in that he tells stories of the old and new West in meter and rhyme.
Most of it tends to be on the humorous side, exposing the nature and flaws in his cowboy culture and sharing it with his audiences in a spirit of good fun. Then, he will turn around and give you something serious in regards to the things cowboys hold most important in their lives.
Dave has performed and headlined at shows across the West and finds a receptive audience wherever he goes. He is an internationally published writer of Western novels and short stories, as well as an actor, and a member of the Reno based comedy improve group The Cutting Edge. So, if you combine Dave's cowboy experience, stage work, acting, and comedy performances you come up with a performer who is definitely unique. Dave creates and writes all of his own material, each poem is a performance in itself, changing voices, facial expressions, and moving with the story he puts the viewer in the boots of each character. Along with the poetry he mixes in humorous anecdotes about his own cowboy nature. You won't ever find Dave standing rigidly behind a microphone reciting.
